In his first public comments since being smacked in the face by Will Smith at the Oscars on Sunday, comedian Chris Rock says he is “still processing” the incident that made global headlines.
Rock performed a sold-out stand-up concert in Boston on Wednesday evening, joking, “How was your weekend?” before admitting he didn’t plan to go into detail about the incident.
“I’m still processing what occurred,” Rock told the crowd. “At some point, I’ll talk about that shit.” “It’ll be a terrible situation. It’ll be funny, but for the time being, I’ll tell some jokes.”
At Sunday’s Rock appeared on stage at the Academy Awards on Sunday to present the award for best documentary. He made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, that alluded to the 1997 film “G.I. Jane,” in which Demi Moore shaved her head. It’s unclear whether Rock was aware that Pinkett Smith suffers from a hair-loss problem.
Will Smith stormed the stage and slapped Rock before taking home the award for best actor less than an hour later. In a statement released on Monday, the actor expressed regret to both Rock and the Academy.
